Our composting month started out a bit rough...... we just didn't like the idea of building our own. We know we're only going to be here for 3 more years. I'm not counting down, I swear :) So the removal of the compost when we put the house on the market seemed dreadful. Plus, between the Louisiana bugs and shall we say moisture problem (aka sponge for a yard) we didn't like the idea of leaving the pile on the ground next to our house or in plain sight in the itsy bitsy backyard..... so we totally splurged and bought an awesome sun-mar composter from Gaiam. I KNOW it was super expensive.... but we've had tons of friends with sun-mar products and they last forever, we can take it with us when we move, it is so easy to rotate the compost and it's continual! Which means as it composts it goes into an internal drum and you can remove it and add it to the garden. I did have a 20% off coupon too! Truly this was our our first idea for One Small Change, but it took us two months to save up for it. Yes I realize I am totally attempting to justify our purchase..... but see how pretty she looks next to the homemade rain barrel system?? And don't you think she needs a name? Ask your kids and leave us a suggestion! Silly yes, I know, but fun none the less :)
I can't wait to share a picture of the first bucket of good stuff from her! You know I read somewhere you could sprinkle it around your plants during the growing season to feed them??
So onto our One Small Change for March........ hangin' out the wash. My husband installed a retractable line for us to use. If there is a chance of rain we can even hang it under the carport..... this really does save electricity. Even if it doesn't quite get dry, I can toss it in the dryer for 15 minutes and it's good to go. Also, it helps me stay on top of the wash. I can really only dry one load at a time.... so if I do one load a day.... I don't get behind on laundry..... an added bonus in a house of 6!! Another helpful thing is this rule we follow with our clothes..... undies, socks and shirts that directly touch our skin are a one day use.... but the pants and over-shirts/sweaters must be looked at and hung up for a second or sometimes third day of wear if not soiled. I mean really, if the kids have an inside day, do you need to wash those jeans? Yes, that skives some folks out a bit..... but with a big family that saves us a load of wash every day! Think of the water & electricity used to wash that unnecessary load.. times 7 days a week..... times 52 weeks a year! You get the picture.
I do love that crisp fresh feel of wash hung on the line..........
Happy little changes in March :)
